Earlier this year, I read the horror novel Tell Me I'm Worthless by Alison Rumfitt and today I'll post my review of the book.
Description from Goodreads
Three years ago, Alice spent one night in an abandoned house with her friends, Ila and Hannah. Since then, Alice’s life has spiraled. She lives a haunted existence, selling videos of herself for money, going to parties she hates, drinking herself to sleep.
Memories of that night torment Alice, but when Ila asks her to return to the House, to go past the KEEP OUT sign and over the sick earth where teenagers dare each other to venture, Alice knows she must go.
Together, Alice and Ila must face the horrors that happened there, must pull themselves apart from the inside out, put their differences aside, and try to rescue Hannah, whom the House has chosen to make its own.
My Thoughts on the Book
Tell Me I'm Worthless is a very unpleasant read at times and I do get why it has mixed reviews online. That said, in my opinion, sometimes books needs to make us uncomfortable, as for instance, this book deals with transphobia, antisemitism, and fascism, among other things.
Although several of the characters are rather unlikeable, they're still well-fleshed out and complex characters, which is a good thing. That said, I personally felt the writing was perhaps a little bit uneven in places, and I wish The House was a bit more prominent throughout the book, but maybe that's just me. An element I did enjoy though, was that I got the vibe of allegorical haunted house story from it.
Would I recommend this book? On one side, it's a book I think a lot of people should read because of the topics it includes, but it's not a book for everyone.
