Earlier this year, I read the horror novella Linghun by Ai Jiang and today I'll post my review of the book.
Description from Goodreads
From acclaimed author Ai Jiang, follow Wenqi, Liam, and Mrs. to the mysterious town of HOME, a place where the dead live again as spirits, conjured by the grief-sick population that refuses to let go. This edition includes a foreword by Yi Izzy Yu, Translator of The Shadow Book of Ji Yun, the essay "A Ramble on Di Fu Ling & Death" by the author, and two bonus short stories from Jiang: "Yǒngshí" and "Teeter Totter."
My Thoughts on the Book
Linghun is honestly more sad and thought-provoking than anything else. It deals with grief and what it can do to the living left behind, especially if family members are neglected in one way or another. Linghun also has some allegorical vibes to it, and it's a poignant commentary on what damage unresolved grief can do to people and families. I really felt for Wenqi and Liam especially. My only issue with the book is that I felt the ending was a bit rushed.
Overall it's a thought-provoking and moving read, even if it wasn't 100 per cent perfect.
