Last month, I read the YA thriller I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan and today I'll post my review of the book.
Description from Goodreads
Four teens fight to outsmart a killer who intends to avenge a young boy's death in this suspenseful thriller that inspired the classic horror film.
After a party, four teens are in a hit-and-run accident that results in a young boy's death. Unable to deal with the consequences, they leave the body behind and make an anonymous phone call to the police, tipping them off.
The group makes a secret pact to bury the memory of that night and never speak of it again, but when one of the girls receives a note that reads "I know what you did last summer," their dark lie is unearthed. With twists and turns at every corner, they'll have to fight to stay steps ahead of a killer determined to make them pay.
My Thoughts on the Book
While I Know What You Did Last Summer is an entertaining quick read with a fast pace, I feel that's about it about the book. The only character I felt had some depth to them, was Ray, as the others felt a bit too one-dimensional and a bit of a parody with all the stereotypes at times. Also, the revised edition of this book mentions cellphones and such, which gives it a bit of an clumsy vibe, as it messes with the plot a bit. Sometimes it's better to just let things be, instead of revising it.
It's an okay read if you want some quick and light entertainment with some slasher vibes, but it's not like you're missing out on anything if you're not reading it.
By the way, has anyone watched either the 1997 or 2025 adaption(s) of this book?
