I recently read the bizarro slasher novella Slasher Camp for Nerd Dorks by Christoph Paul and today I'll post my review of the book.
Description from Goodreads
Freddy versus Jason Meets Wet Hot American Summer. Nuff Said.
Jason Voorheesberg has struggled to become the great slasher his mom believes he can be and has as bad case of Slasher Anxiety. He is sent to one of the worse ranked camps for young slashers: Slasher Camp for Nebulous Youth #987.When she drops Jason off at the camp, he gets bullied by the Jock Slashers and is attacked by the rich, snooty protagonists of the rival Final Camp across the lake. He hates the camp and is considered the worst slasher by the Pred counselors. Even though he makes a friend with Slasher Candybee Wamack and develops a forbidden relationship with a Slazer (Final Girl who slays Slashers), he struggles even more with his slasher anxiety. Can love (and homicide) conquer all and save Jason from a life of mediocrity?
My Thoughts on the Book
I didn't expect too much going into Slasher Camp for Nerd Dorks, but it was an entertaining and quick read. It's a bit over the top, but in a good way, and with plenty of references and such to horror movies. Other elements I enjoyed were the author's ironic voice, which suited this story, and the dark ending which surprised me a bit.
I thought Slasher Camp for Nerd Dorks could have been fleshed out a bit more at some points, in addition to being longer and polished overall, but that's perhaps a bit more a me-thing than anything else.
It was overall an enjoyable and okay read, and considering the length, one could easily read it in a sitting during the summer.
